Thousands of people have taken to the streets to Protest over the last five days after Turkish Government arrested the mayor of Istanbul.
Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu was arrested with the allegations of corruption and bribery just days before he was about to receive his party’s nomination to run for president. He has been described his imprisonment as a political execution without trial.
Ekrem has denied this allegation and said they are politically motivated.
Ekrem ImamoÄŸlu was widely seen as the candidate most likely to defeat President ErdoÄŸan in general election after almost two decades in power.
The AFP News agency also reported that Turkey’s opposition party (CHP) has confirmed that they are putting him forward as their candidate in upcoming presidential election.
Istanbul university also announced that it is revoking Ekrem’s degree due to alleged irregularities which will affect his ability to run for president, since the Turkish constitution says that presidential must have completed high education to hold office.
Turkey’s current leader(Erdoğan) who has served as their prime minister for the last 2 decades accused the opposition party of trying to disturb the peace and polarize the people.
Protest in the country has got so intense that they’ve now placed a several day ban on all gatherings in Istanbul.
More than 1100 hundred people were arrested including 10 journalists and number of left wing politicians.
As per report, Protesters were attacked with tear gas, water cannon and pepper spray by the authorities.
